Rollerball on paper

Recently on a visit to Château la Coste, a domain with stunning outdoor contemporary architecture and sculpture installations, north of Aix, I was inspired to make a drawing a kilometer in length. I was inspired to make a drawing a kilometer in length. I began by drawing parallel lines on a sheet of paper, as if to mark the kilometer’s length by repeated strokes, like those marking the passage of time on a clock, then continuing onto the next sheet, and  on and on. Obsessive repetition and seriality drive my work, opening the door to minute variations that accrue and ultimately transform the work. This has been my working process all along, transformation by increments.

So far, I have completed about forty sheets. In order to reach my goal of a kilometer I will need to fill two thousand.  The way in which I draw the lines yields forms that evolve in fluid variations, randomly transforming from one sheet to the next.
